The 500th Edition: 50 YEARS AGO, Jo Van Fleet, in WILD RIVER, Explained THE TEA PARTY

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

This is the 500th Edition of THE DAILY GRAND and SUNDRY Blog.

This Blog  would like to honor this occasion by ruminating on the TEA PARTY, WILD RIVER and Ms. Jo Van Fleet, and the prescience of Elia Kazan. Fifty years ago, his film,  WILD RIVER was released; in it is the best explanation of TEA PARTY principles ever given, by Jo Van Fleet to Montgomery Clift.

Over the  course of the last year, I have gotten quite a few emails from denizens of Europe asking me to explain the notorious TEA PARTY.

To my European readers, The TEA PARTY is deeper than a slogan, or fecklessness, or cribbing glibness, or designer shallowness. It is Jo Van Fleet in WILD RIVER(1960). Fifty years ago, FIFTY YEARS AGO, 50 years ago, Jo Van Fleet laid it all out in the film WILD RIVER.  Jo Van Fleet gave birth to the TEA PARTY right then.

BACK STORY

The Tennessee River was a killer, so the United States Government, under Franklin Delano Roosevelt, decided to tame the river, the wild river, by creating the Tennessee Valley Authority(TVA) and building a series of dams along the river.

The dams would flood out old homesteads, so Federal agents fanned out through the path of the floods to buy the land.  WILD RIVER is about the one woman who would not sell out to the Federal Government, the first Tea Partier.

WILD RIVER is one of the great American films EVER made. It starred Montgomery Clift as the young do gooder from Washington, brought in to convince the lady farmer to sell out, and a radiant Lee Remick as the young widow who falls for him.

It was Directed by the towering genius of American theater and film, Elia Kazan.

If you have ever wondered where the ideology of the TEA PARTY comes from, it comes from Jo Van Fleet articulating the rights of the people above the rights of the government, even above the rights of progress(something we should all remember concerning the situation in Afghanistan).

With great honor, and humility, in this 500th Edition, this Blog honors the 50th anniversary of WILD RIVER by sharing with you, Jo Van Fleet in WILD RIVER.

 Elia Kazan

This  Greek, born in a country which no longer exists(the Ottoman Empire) came to America at the age of four. This immigrant knew more about America, and the Tea Party  than any living pundit or politician, including Mama Grizzlies.

The Gulf Oil Spill, Our Potemkin Government

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

For more than thirty days, a hemorrhaging of oil has spilled out of the earth, as black in appearance, and intent as DARTH VADER. The whole purpose of this residual ancient life, is to kill modern life over a thousand miles of sea, beaches, marsh lands, killing shrimp, fish, birds, killing all the bounty of the sea that we live on.

This oil spill is as massive a disaster as the Siberian Traps or the Tunguska Event, or the Haiti Earthquake. The difference is, it is Man Made, and prompt attention by our government could have minimized this catastrophe.

OUR GOVERNMENT

What have we learned from this disaster? That we have a Potemkin Government. Count Potemkin was a Russian General and the lover of Empress Catherine The Great. She being an Enlightened woman, wanted progress for her people. Potemkin delivered, in his own way, he   “had hollow facades of villages constructed along the desolate banks of the Dnieper River in order to impress the monarch and her travel party with the value of her new conquests, thus enhancing his standing in the empress’ eyes.”

This Gulf Oil Spill Disaster has shown us, we, the American people, that our Government is Potemkin hollow in its roots, its trunk, and its branches.

We have no Government, it is all a Potemkin village, hollow.

One of the glories of America, when we had a Government, was the competence of those  up and down the chain of command. The Colonels, the Diplomats, the Geologists, the Bureaucrats were all gloriously commonly competent.

When the Japanese attacked us, we had George C. Marshall as Chief of Staff, and on the bench leaders like Douglas MacArthur, Eisenhower,Admiral Chet Nimitz. They were there, in the structure of Government, waiting for the crisis to come. They knew that their jobs was to defeat the crisis, by action.

THE COAST GUARD

The Gulf Oil Spill Crisis came and look at what our Government has given us. The head of the Coast Guard, Thad Allen, is an idiot. He is as clueless as one of those next door neighbors on a sitcom. He is a buffoon.

His point person on this spill, Admiral Mary Landry is a co idiot. How in the hell did these two dullards rise to command of this important agency, in a time of teorrrist attacks?

All they have is a knowledge of bureaucratic mumbo jumbo….”we are standing up resources”. They could not lead a pack of lemmings to a cliff.

They both relish this pseudo commando language more than action itself.  As she was introducing the BP representative at a news conference today, Admiral Landry seemed to be having multiple orgasms as she said the words, “TOP KILL.” I counted her saying it a minimum of five times, in two minutes. TOP KILL, TOP KILL, TOP KILL.  My God, it was like she would not have authorized this process if BP had named it TOP WOUND.

In a crisis like this, language does not matter, marketing does not matter, lingo does not matter, jargon does matter, slogans do not matter. What matters is stuffing that spill at its mouth.

OUR CABINET SECRETARIES

Salazar of Interior

“U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar defended the federal government’s response to the Gulf oil spill in a congressional hearing Wednesday, calling the government’s action “a relentless effort since day one” and labeling it the “single largest response in the history of the United States to an oil spill.”

Who among us CARES if they amassed the largest response in human history to fight this oil spill, if it does not work. What they have done, for over thirty days, does not work, and he doesn’t care because he responded? Effort does not count, the win counts. We don’t pay professionals for effort,we pay professionals to win.;

This is not Participation Week, the response does not matter, THE WIN MATTERS. In this case, stopping that oil leak. Memo To Salazar, take a large barge, or a large slab of concrete and sink in on top of the damn hole, blocking the hole until we figure something out.

“Salazar brushed off the criticism, saying he dispatched his second-in-command, Deputy Interior Secretary David Hayes, to the Gulf region within hours of the spill “without even a change of clothes or even a change of underwear.”

What is wrong with these damn people?, do you think Washington gave a damn crossing the Delaware if he had a pair of clean underwear. The Gulf is dying in front of our eyes, and our Leaders are concerned about CLEAN UNDERWEAR?

Dr. Chu, Energy Department

Dr. Chu is a smart man, won a Nobel Prize, runs our Energy Department. His comments to Rachel Maddow on May 24, 2010

CHU: Well, when President Obama took office, the renewable energy excluding hydro was something on the order of a little bit less than 4 percent.  He made a pledge to double the amount of renewables, wind and solar—primarily wind—in the next three years.  We are on track to do that. But that‘s really taking wind from 3 percent to 6 percent.  It‘s going to take several doublings in order to get us up to the place where we need to be.”

Memo to Dr, Chu, we can get back to the Moon by 2025, and mine Helium-3, and never worry about oil spills or doubling wind power again,,,,but the Obama Administration cancelled out ability to return to the moon.

Asked about the Obama Administration continuing to issue oil leases in the middle of the giant oil spill, Dr. Chu answered,:

CHU: ” Well, I don‘t know the details of what was approved and not approved, I only know what I read in the papers.”

Dr. Chu did promise “an all nighter” to resolve this, as if the death of a world was an academic exercise. But that is the point, it is ALL an  academic exercise to the Obama Administration, no one in the Administration has a heart, or a maturity beyond graduate school.

THE PRESIDENT

Editor’s Note - The following is an edited   transcript of President Obama’s speech made Wednesday ( May 26, 2010)

It is great to be in Fremont, good to be back in Northern California. (Northern California?, this is more than A MONTH after the largest  oil spill in American history. FDR was a cripple in a wheelchair ,but we all know he would have gone down to the Gulf to see what was happening, or have sent Eleanor….JFK had a back which had been cut in half by a Japanese destroyer, but we all know he would have gone down to the Gulf to see what was happening, or sent Bobby or Jackie……none of them would have gone to a fund raising dinner in Northern California while our Southern Coast was being killed).

(incidentally Nashville, which experienced the worst flood since the creation of the TVA is still waiting for a visit, a visit from a man who took AIR FORCE ONE to Copenhagen for one day to try and get Chicago the Olympics)…. it’s wonderful to be here in Northern California. It is always nice to get out of Washington a little bit.

…..So I try to visit places like this about once a week,(everywhere but the Gulf, or Nashville)..

…Now, earlier today I spoke to Energy Secretary Steven Chu, who, as you know, is a Nobel Prize-winning physicist. And he’s been on the scene in the Gulf, deeply involved in our efforts to bring this crisis to an end. And we discussed today’s attempt to stop the leak through what’s known as the “top kill,” plugging the well with densely packed mud to prevent any more oil from escaping. If it’s successful — and there are no guarantees — it should greatly reduce or eliminate the flow of oil now streaming into the Gulf from the sea floor. And if it’s not, there are other approaches that may be viable.

….The  nation that leads the clean energy economy is likely to lead the global economy. And if we fail to recognize that same imperative, we risk falling behind. We risk falling behind. (Applause.)

… over the lifetime of this expanded facility, that could be like replacing as many as eight coal-fired power plants.

If the President would keep our space program intact, we could return to the Moon by 2025, mine it for Helium-3; and solve all our climate, fossil fuel, hydrocarbon, clean energy, energy problems FOREVER. One shuttle load of HELIUM-3, ONE SHUTTLE LOAD of HELIUM-3 would power the entire United States for 1 year.

China and India and Russia are planning to go to the Moon and mine Helium-3; President Obama cancelled our way out of this deadly, Earth killing fossil fuel trap.

Shame on him for allowing these oil spills to have a life span of more than 15 years; for if he had continued our Space program to the Moon, there would be no oil spills after 2025.

Any government which will not grab the future is a hollow government, a Potemkin government.

Mr. President, I implore you, get your priorities straight. What good is an universal health mandate if there are no shrimp to eat, no birds to see flying, no water which is blue?

What good is a Government which cannot keep the shrimp alive? the birds flying? or the water blue? What good indeed?
