President Obama Bows to The Japanese Emperor, Unleashes Groucho Marx
There is much upset over President Obama’s bow to the Japanese Emperor; sorry to disappoint you readers but that gesture does not interest this blog.
But the trail where that gesture led interests this blog.
While discussing the bow on CNN’s STATE OF THE UNION, a Ms. Yellin made the following remark:
YELLIN:” This couldn’t have been an accident. I mean, he must have known. They walk you through protocol before you go and do this. To Candy’s point, I interviewed Mitt Romney last week. He made many of the same points that we were talking about earlier. But one of his points is he believes that this president has a philosophical view of the world that America is in a slow decline and we have to accommodate ourselves to this decline.”
Mitt Romney, the stiffest man in America, thinks cool President Obama accepts the slow decline of America, and he, as President, must not arrest that decline but accommodate it.
Could the stiff Mormon who saved STAPLES be right? If we work under the assumption that sometimes your enemies are right on their objections, he may well be right.
But why would President Obama think America is in decline? His father was the smartest Kenyan yet produced, and his mother was the embodiment of every Pete Seeger song ever written, why would he think we are in decline?
Which brings us to Groucho Marx.
I DON’T WANT TO BELONG TO ANY CLUB THAT WILL ACCEPT PEOPLE LIKE ME AS A MEMBER..Groucho Marx
And there it is; President Obama sees his very own election as symptomatic and symbolic of the decline of America. He achieved what eluded Senator Henry Clay, Senator Daniel Webster,Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes, Governor Adlai Stevenson, William Jennings Bryan, Senator Robert Taft, Governor Thomas Dewey, Senator Bob Dole,General Winfield Scott, General Winfield Scott Hancock, General Douglas MacArthur,General George McClellan, Samuel Tilden, Barry Goldwater,Vice President Walter Mondale, Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, Vice President Al Gore, war hero John McCain and Hillary Clinton.
What these people of power and achievement, ideas and background failed to achieve at the height of America’s power, he achieved.
Of course President Obama understands Groucho Marx’s insight; if the society was not in decline, they would not have elected me.
To the President, his own election is the contrary evidence, which proves the viability of his belief America is in decline. What else but decline explains the nation, in the midst of two wars count them, two, elect a President who has never served?
His election is not a manifestation of hope forPresident Obama, but a manifestation of the decline of our nation. Just as President Carter thought America had accepted do goodism as policy with his election victory over Gerald Ford, so too President Obama believes his election serves a larger purpose, the acceptance of decline.
Churchill once famously said, “I won’t be elected to preside over the liquidation of the British Empire.” He wasn’t elected, Atlee was; and the British Empire was liquidated.
Obama sees himself as Atlee, and his election confirmation of our decline.
President Obama’s internal logic is very simple, “No great nation in ascendancy would elect me as president, ergo the nation is in decline.”
Who knew Groucho Marx was a political pundit of such a high order?

Our first President, George Washington did not choose to shake hands — instead he bowed. Could it be that President Obama is harkening back to that earlier example? It certainly makes as much sense as the silliness I’ve read about Obama’s bowing. When the elder Bush was in Japan I recall he vomited on his host.
